Lone Wolf Farm's production methods incorporate the practices of integrated pest management, organic production, and regenerative agriculture.
Integrated pest management, or IPM, is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties. Pesticides are used only after monitoring indicates they are needed according to established guidelines, and treatments are made with the goal of removing only the target organism. Pest control materials are selected and applied in a manner that minimizes risks to human health, beneficial and non-target organisms, and the environment.
Organic production is a system that integrates "cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity”..Organic production does allow for the use of organic spray materials, and we do use these when available or appropriate, however, it is sometimes necessary to use a synthetic crop protection material to achieve the desired level of pest control. In these cases we will use only materials of the highest environmental and food safety. We operate organically but are not a certified organic farm.
Regenerative agriculture is a conservation and rehabilitation approach to food and farming systems. It focuses on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, supporting bio-sequestration, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of farm soil. Our efforts in this area include the establishment of wildlife/beneficial insect habitat, composting, the use of cover crops and mulches, establishment of field/waterway buffers, wetland maintenance, and the use of biological soil amendments.
